Umbria the green heart of ItalyUmbria is bordered by Tuscany to the west, The Marches to the northwest and Lazio to the East and North-East. Its provinces are Peruga and Terni, Peruga being the capital of the region. Umbria is often described as verdant thanks to its hills, valleys and abundant vegetation, vineyards and olive groves. The wide range of flora is characterised by the oak and beech trees. The fauna is rich in variety and here you can see squirrels, foxes, porcupines and beech-martens and there are a great number of different species of migratory and indigenous birds.
Umbria's Major Town
Gubbio unquestionably remains the most important city for the people of Umbria, the only place that can be compared to the Etruscan cities of Tuscany.
Gubbio Vallingegneo Castel
The castle, whose core was erected in the year 1000 around the master tower was the Gabrielli family's domain. In 1206 Saint Francesco was imprisoned within it's walls.
Todi
The city of Todi was originally founded by the Umbrians. It then became Etruscan between the 4th and 5th Century B.C. and known by the name of Tutere. In Todi, between the flight of steps that lead to the Duomo, the Palazzo dei Priori, del Capitano del Popolo and del Podesta, can be found one of the most beautiful piazza's of Italy. Whoever comes here stops with amazement - the piazza is perfectly square, the stones, the surfaces, the lightings, all seem to come from another world. When walking in the piazza a man's thoughts seem to become clearer in his mind.
Upon arriving at the border of Todi, the road surrounding the medieval walls of the city will take you to the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, which was constructed in 1503 and attributed to Bramante.
Tevere Regional Park
The park includes the river Tevere's lower banks in Umbria. The 50 km long river course has been altered by an hydroelectric scheme that helped form the Corbara Lake and expansion of the Alviano. Although the area has changed, its natural charm remains untouched.
The pitturesque and austere town of Spoleto and its ancient history is one of the main tourist centres of Umbria.
Nocera Umbra, the centre and origin of Umbria (Noukria) of the VIth century A.C. was a roman municipality and was named Nuceria Camellaria. It then became famous for the making of wooden vases.
Orvieto
The town of Orvieto upon its hilltop and with its profile of the Duomo holds the emblem of the city of the world. Because of this high up position, it was necessary for the town to restore an antique cable railway to connect Orvieto's station to the historical centre. At Campo della Fiera there is also a big and efficient covered car-park with escalators and lifts dug into the hill that can take you to the medieval quarter.
At the heart of Orvieto is Piazza del Duomo, a pleasant area surrounded by ancient palaces and the imposing structure of the Duomo. The marvellous facade of the Duomo raised and meticulously carved with miniatures, beams polychrome marbles and mosaics and monopolizes all the attention thanks to its pure linear construction.
Perugia
Perugia dominates the Valle del Tevere from the top of its sharp and irregular hilltop: the particular formation of the terrain has created a great variety of urban conditions, which gives a particular aspect to the city. Since the dawn of time Perugia has been considered a unique city of primary importance thanks to its extremely rich artistic, cultural and environmental legacy.
The piazza is without a doubt one of the most beautiful of Italy; splendid buildings look over it and the Fontana Maggiore dominates from the centre. One side of the piazza is occupied by the Palazzo dei Priori, constructed in travertino, with white and red stone. Inside the palace is the main office of the National Umbrian Gallery. The most important gathering of medieval and modern art of the region.
The Trasimeno Park
The park encompasses the entire group of lakes including the centres of the Castiglione lake and Passignano. Three islands emerge from these waters: La Pavese, La Maggiore and La Minore. The last is uninhabited and has remained completely wild. The waters of the lakes offer a priceless ichthyic fauna: tenches, eels, pikes, royal perches...all these can be made into delicious dishes, truly unique for their delicacy.
The park offers worthy services for all kinds of sports and for your free time: canoeing, sailing, water-skiing, wind-surfing, all practicable in three boat clubs. Fishing and cycling are also offered at the golf. The natural oasis of the valley is managed by an environmental association. However, there is the possibility of having a guided or free excursion.
