The village dominates Monsummano Terme
and Valdinievole in the west , whereas in the East it overlooks
the hills of Montalbano. We are in the province of Pistoia. The medieval
village is an ancient defensive fortification constructed during the
XII century during the war between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. During
the XV century, the Medici family chose these as a hunting reserve,
and during the period of Ferdinand I a residence was built that today
is testimony to the pure architecture of Villa Medicea. In the surroundings we can find the Padule di Fucecchio, 1800 hectares of marshland; the largest in Italy. This is a natural reserve which can be discovered by bicycle or by foot. Monsummano Terme has a literary tradition that dates back to the XIX century, having been home town to the poet Giusti and politician Marini. The neoclassical house of Giusti was turned into a museum, whereas Marini's abode, the well known Villa Renatico, is now a cultural centre that hosts exhibitions and congresses. For golf lovers, the 18 hole golf course of Monsummano is of particular appeal. For your own relaxation and well being, Grotta Giusti Thermal Centre is the obvious choice, with excellent service for a wide selection of therapies, from mud baths, to the thermal 35 degree pool with underwater Jacuzzi. It also sports a Lounge Bar where all sorts of herbal teas are to be discovered as well as an excellent selection of national wines. Of all the cities, Pistoia is one of the main Tuscan cities and is only a few minutes' drive away from Montevettolini. Its economy is based on nursery gardening, an area for which the city is an important European centre. Its gothic-romanesque style offers as an interesting site for visitors, in particular the Cathedral Square, whose historical buildings of the X and XII centuries have been completely restored. It is also the city of Blues, with important musical events that take place every year during the month of July. Links
